Alvin Queen
– A true master of swing
Alvin Queen is one of the last remaining masters of straight-ahead jazz drumming. With a career spanning over five decades, he has played with legends like Horace Silver, George Benson, and Charles Tolliver, ultimately cementing his legacy as Oscar Peterson’s longtime drummer. His deeply rooted swing, precision, and dynamic intensity have made him a defining force in jazz.
Mentored by Elvin Jones from age 11, Queen embodies the essence of jazz drumming, drawing from greats like Max Roach and Art Blakey while forging his own unique style. His playing is a powerful blend of fire, lyricism, and pure musical instinct, capable of both thunderous swing and delicate emotional depth.
His acclaimed album Night Train to Copenhagen, produced by Niels Lan Doky, pays homage to jazz tradition while showcasing his modern sensibility. With a spirit of innovation and an unwavering commitment to the art form, Alvin Queen remains, as musicians often proclaim, “the real deal”.
